Over 2,500 years ago, Valmiki wrote The Ramayana, which is one of the greatest epics of ancient India. Not just a story, it is one of the prominent and timeless narratives of the triumph of good over evil, with duty, devotion, and sacrifice playing a major role.
The epic is about the journey of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, his wife Sita, and his loyal brother Lakshmana as they face exile, challenges, and ultimately the battle against the demon king Ravana. The story is well known about major characters, yet it is filled with some lesser-known but powerful figures whose contributions are worth knowing. In this article, we explore these unsung heroes who may not always be in the spotlight, but whose roles hold deep lessons in loyalty, strength, and devotion.
1. Shatrughna – The Forgotten Brother
Unlike his brother, Shatrugen is often ignored in the story. He fearlessly killed the demon Lavana, ruler of Mathura, reviving peace. He stayed in Ayodhya to assist his brother Bharat in governing.
2. Urmila – The Sleeping Princess
- Urmila was the wife of Lakshmana and daughter of King Janaka. She stayed back when Lakshmana followed Rama into exile. As per some versions, she took Lakshmana’s sleep for 14 years so he could remain awake and protect Rama.
3. Mandavi & Shrutakirti – Forgotten Daughters of Janaka
- Sita and Urmila had two other sisters who were married to Bharata and Shatrughna. They are known to have played significant but silent roles in Ayodhya during the exile.
4. Jatayu—The Brave Bird Who Tried to Save Sita
- He was the vulture king who fought Ravana when he kidnapped Sita. Even though wounded, he told Rama about Sita’s abduction. His sacrifice displayed his devotion that was not limited to humans.
5. Guha – The Nishad King
- Guha was a tribal king and a close friend of Rama who helped Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana cross the Ganga during exile.
6. Vali & Tara
- Vali was the monkey king who was killed by Rama. His wife, Tara, wise and intelligent, averted war after his death.
7. Ahalya’s Redemption
- Ahalya was turned into stone after being cursed by her husband, Gautama. She was later liberated by Rama’s touch during exile.
The Ramayana is a worthy epic that symbolizes the Triumph of Good over Evil!
